Julia B. Freeman, Ph.D

Julia B. Freeman, Ph.D., has served as the Centers Program Director at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) since 1987. She manages a portfolio of research centers, including research core centers, specialized centers of research, and multidisciplinary centers that cross the research areas of the Institute.

Dr. Freeman also serves as the Director of Women's and Minority Health Issues for the Institute, coordinating the varied programs through which NIAMS addresses special opportunities for research and training.

Dr. Freeman came to National Institutes of Health in 1985 as the Diabetes Program Director in the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases. From 1970 - 1985, she served on the faculty of the Pharmacology Department of the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she rose to the rank of full professor. She was also the Director of the Graduate Program for the Pharmacology Department. Her research laboratory focused on the molecular basis of insulin resistance in obesity and diabetes. She co-authors a textbook on pharmacology for nursing students now in the sixth edition.

Dr. Freeman received her undergraduate education at Radcliffe College and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Indiana University. She did post-doctoral training at Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health.
